In vegetated areas, some LiDAR pulses can reach the ground through gaps in the canopy; the result depends on vegetation density, flight geometry and quality control.

Where LiDAR acquisition is useful
Forest, dense vegetation and terrain partly hidden by the canopy.
Mixed areas with buildings, vegetation and water.
Technical corridors and power lines crossing forested areas.
From canopy to a verifiable terrain model
Assess vegetation and access
We analyse canopy type and density, terrain, flight corridors, access for control and areas where data may be limited.
Configure the flight for the site
Flight-line geometry, altitude, speed and control are selected so that the available returns and checks support the project objective.
Data configured around terrain conditions
The data can support terrain and vegetation classification, DTM/DSM, profiles, contours, orthophotos and CAD/GIS exports when agreed for the project.

3D data for ground beneath vegetation
Terrain and vegetation analysed separately
Classification can separate ground points from vegetation and structures, then support DTM, DSM, profiles and contour lines, with checks in critical areas.
LiDAR does not ‘see’ through a solid canopy
Ground points occur where pulses pass through gaps to the terrain. Results vary with the season, vegetation density, flight geometry and ground control.
From the field to the point cloud
Ground identified beneath vegetation along a 6 km route
This FAE video presents a LiDAR point cloud along the shore of Lake Bicaz and ground points obtained beneath trees. It is a real example, not a guarantee that every forest will provide the same coverage.
